Preventing and Responding to Student Misbehavior

44% of teachers leaving the profession and 53% of teachers transferring schools list student behavior as a major factor in their decision (US Department of Education, 2005)

Clearly, disruptive student behavior is a major concern facing teachers and principals. However, some teachers are told that a stimulating curriculum and high expectations are all that is needed for students to excel. While these are necessary, they are not sufficient in today’s classroom environment. A disrupted classroom fails to provide the basic framework for academic proficiency. Sometimes a single student may disturb the entire class, creating gaps in student achievement not only of the disruptive student, but also for the entire class. This one day seminar will provide research based preventive strategies to create a focused classroom environment, followed by effective strategies to manage difficult students when preventive strategies are not enough. It will include practical suggestions for creating good relationships with students, minimizing power struggles, improving motivation, and dealing with bullies. To increase implementation of these strategies, a Professional Learning Community has been established on this website on the Discussion Board page where teachers are invited to post challenges they face, and offers assistance to others solving challenges. The seminar is intended for k-12 regular education and special education teachers. Participants are eligible to receive 1/2 semester graduate credit from Adams State University, after a registration forms, and a fee of $22.50 has been sent directly to the university.  CEUs (7 hours) are also available when a registration form and a $10 processing fee sent directly to Adams State College.
